What is Diabetes?

Diabetes also knows as diabetes mellitus is a group of sicknesses classified as metabolism disorders. Metabolism is the way our bodies transform the food we have consumed into energy and growth. Most of the food we have used is turned into glucose. This product is used by all cells in the human body as a source of energy. Insulin is essential for the intake of glucose into the cells. It cannot fuel the tissues if insulin is not present.

Diabetes is the condition when a person has too much glucose in his bloodstream or as it is commonly called has too high blood sugar levels. This can be caused by either low levels of insulin, no insulin at all, or if the cells do not respond correctly to it. If the energy source is not used by the body it is thrown out of the body through the urine. As a result the body produces enough energy but it never reaches the cells allowing them to grow.

There are three types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 is the condition when the body doe not have the ability to produce insulin and it has no be added externally. People have to swallow it in the forms of pills or inject it daily sometimes a couple of times a day. It is also called insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes.

Type 2 is when the body has developed a resistance to the substance. The body fails to use insulin to transfer glucose to the cells. Often, this condition is coupled with absolute insulin deficiency.

The third type- gestational diabetes is when pregnant women have high levels of glucose during pregnancy. This might occur even if they have never had diabetes before. Very often pregnancy diabetes can result in the development of type 2 diabetes after giving child birth.
